I'm not sure how to categorize this. It's not really horror, but there is something spooky about it (and the title is fantastic). Jackson is very skilled when it comes to creating an unsettling atmosphere, and she has you wondering for just the right amount of time. Something has happened and something will happened, both of them bad things, but all you get are hints. I wouldn't have minded if there had been a bloodier ending and if there had been more overall misery, but it was still a very nice book to end the year with.
